Governor Doug Ducey (R) signs executive order to create Institute for Automated Mobility
  • In case you missed it, on Oct. 9th Governor Doug Ducey (R) signed an Executive Order creating the Institute for Automated Mobility (IAM), a public-private consortium to collaborate on research and testing of autonomous vehicles.
  • The IAM will be overseen by the Arizona Commerce Authority. Members will include the Arizona Department of Transportation, the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the Governor’s advisor for science and technology, Arizona State University, the University of Arizona, Northern Arizona University; and representatives from any company testing autonomous vehicles in the state. Intel Corp. is the group’s first private-sector partner.
  • The IAM will include a testing track, several miles of real road with technology-neutral infrastructure, a simulation lab to test real-world scenarios and a Traffic Incident Management project to apply public safety policies to AV technology.
  • The announcement follows a March 2018 Executive Order allowing autonomous vehicles to operate without a human driver in the state. It also follows a fatal car crash earlier this year between an Uber self-driving car and a pedestrian in Tempe, Arizona, that led companies around the country to pause their autonomous vehicle tests.
