OCT. 4 NEWS: PROPOSITION 127 UPDATES

10/4/2018

Arizona Attorney General’s Office changes Proposition 127 language:
  • As you may remember, Proposition 127 would require the state’s regulated utilities to achieve 50% renewable energy by 2030; and will be considered by voters this November.
  • In case you missed it last week, Attorney General Mark Brnovich’s (R) office made changes to the proposition language stating that utilities would need to meet the renewable energy requirements “irrespective of cost.” Added language also states that nuclear power plants do not count toward the renewable requirements.
  • According to the Arizona Republic, an official with the Secretary of State’s Office called the added language “eyebrow raising” in an email exchange with the Attorney General’s Office (an email that the paper obtained). Read more here.
  • The Clean Energy For a Healthy Arizona campaign, which is supporting the proposition, said the language change raises “troubling questions.” See here.

Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) releases new report finding Proposition 127 could support an additional 15,800 full-time jobs in 2030:
  • A new report by NRDC finds that passage of Proposition 127 could support an additional 15,800 full-time jobs in 2030, spurred by the new renewable energy development in the state.
  • This jobs number represents direct jobs (e.g. solar installers), indirect jobs (e.g. jobs along the solar supply chain), and induced jobs (e.g. jobs created across the general economy due to spending by those in solar industry). The jobs would also generate $1.2 billion in wages and $2.2 billion in economic activity in 2030.
  • NRDC is one of several organizations supporting the initiative.
AriSEIA thanks Ellen Zuckerman from SWEEP for sharing her report!
