SEPTEMBER 20 NEWS: CLEAN ENERGY BALLOT INITIATIVE

After significant debate, the SRP Board voted 10-to-4 to contribute $50,000 to oppose Proposition 127, the Clean Energy for a Healthy Arizona initiative:

• The initiative does not directly impact SRP, and SRP’s four at-large members voted against the proposal.

• As part of its decision, the SRP Board, “promise[d] that the funds won’t go to groups affiliated with Arizona Public Service,” which has been funding two political action committees to defeat the measure: (1) Arizonans for Affordable Electricity; and (2) Arizonans for Sustainable Energy Policy.

TEP to join opposition to the Clean Energy for a Healthy Arizona initiative:

• Earlier this month, it was reported that UNS Energy Inc., the parent company of TEP and UNSE, formed and plans to fund two political action committees to oppose Proposition 127: (1) Southern Arizonans for Responsible Energy; and (2) Responsible Energy for Mohave County.
• UNS said it will use corporate money and not ratepayer funding. In addition, the company also said that it has no plans to contribute to two APS-backed groups opposing the initiative.
